Minutes of the Meetings -- January 20, 2005

The meeting was called to order by DR at 7:07 p.m.

Opening prayer by PD

Review of minutes of last Board meeting by KJ:  Motion to accept the minutes by DR, second by CJ. Motion passed.

Treasurer’s Report presented by DC:

Interest will be paid on outstanding expenses incurred by DR for church build-out and furnishings until those expenses are paid. Motion by DC Second by CJ.

Motion to approve the Treasurer’s report by KJ, second by PD.  Motion passed.

Old Business:

1.  Facilities:

  1. Some additional electrical work must be done to facilitate use of the copier.
  2. Exterior Signage: The low bid is $2800 + $400 for the sign permit. 50% down will be required before work begins. Then it will be 4 weeks until completion.

2.  Springfest Renewal

  1. Springfest will be held at the Naropa East Campus – 63rd & Arapahoe in Boulder.
  2. Marketing materials are being put together by Denver Unity. 15 to 20 people from this church will probably attend.
  3. Presenters will include Steve Brody, reporter for CNN, CBS and Fox. He will also speak about his book, The New Commandments at LWU on Palm Sunday.

3.  Newsletter will be published in February or March.

4.  Marketing:

  1. Our marketing efforts will be separated into promotion and publicity.
  2. Publicity (non-cash) is being done by Ted Black.
  3. Promotion (cash): We are presently in the Arvada Yellow Pages (DEX) for the old location. Vic has taken down our forwarding sign at the dojo and the new Arvada book will not come out until May.
  4. The Bus Bench provider will seek appropriate locations for us.

5.  Board of Trustees election: Clarence and Kay Johnsen were elected to a second term.

6.  Second service survey results:

  1. 26 surveys were returned.
  2. Seven respondents were interested in an earlier service. Five of the seven wanted a duplicate service.
  3. Five or six others said they wouldn’t be able to predict their attendance pattern but they would prefer the duplicate service.
  4. Band and special music will receive a 50% pay increase for doing 2 services. They will arrive at 8:15 a.m. for the 9 a.m. service.
  5. We will stay with a 1 hour 15 minute service.
  6. The second service will begin at 10:45 a.m. to allow 30 minutes between services.
  7. Organized child care will be offered at the first service. The full youth education program will be offered at the second service.
  8. We will video tape only the 2nd service.
  9. Shannon Ridge will work as assistant, printing announcements and thoughts. She will also assist in the bookstore from 8:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and see that we have adequate greeters and ushers. She will operate slides and sound for the 1st service and work with teens at the 2nd service.
  10. The greatest stumbling block in going to two services is a drain of the congregation’s energy.
  11. Motion to begin earlier service on February 13, 2005 by DR., second by PD. Motion passed

New Business:

7.  Community Outreach

  1. Jen Gordon has suggested that we seek congregants willing to visit residents in extended care at Covenant Village. She is willing to coordinate the effort.
  2. Dianne LaKamp from Vista Care Hospice spoke to the Women’s Group at their January meeting. The Women’s Group will work on crafts for hospice patients with the possible assistance of the children.

8.  Church Growth 

  1. Seventy-five new people have visited LWU since November 7.
  2. We might distribute flyers in the neighborhood again for Easter or our new early service.
  3. Many of the new people have come because they saw our sign.
  4. The Talent Survey will be distributed at the end of the 2nd Unity 101 class.

9.  Event publicity

  1. Ted has gotten out the Shanti Shanti press release and will prepare the Indigo release.
  2. Indigo: Showings will be at 7:00 p.m. Saturday & 2:00 p.m. Sunday.           
  3. The calendar on the web site is updated at least once a month.

10.  Tithes: The total amount will be $1910, $1146 to Rainbow Bridge and $764 to South Central                  Unity Churches Association.
